The Wellcome Trust

We created two films for The Wellcome Trust's 'Collectors' portal. The first, ‘Merchants of Light’ adapts a seventeenth century novella into a sparkling fantasy animation. Inspired by the utopian book by philosopher Francis Bacon, 'New Atlantis', the film ruminates on the possibility of an undiscovered land and its mystical inhabitants.

'Mindcraft' is a dark, dank, fractured movie that investigates the story of James Tilly Matthews and his 'Air Loom' - a machine to control the mind dating from 1810. This film was created by printing every frame and carefully crumpling it up before re-shooting - a painstaking process that gives the film its beautifully cracked and distressed aesthetic.
