Beakus signs new talent!
We were completely smitten by the work of new directing talent Rory Waudby-Tolley from the moment we caught sight of his wonderful film Mr Madila at the RCA graduation show earlier this year. Clever, funny, inventive, succinct, deceptive and eye-opening, it was the stand-out film in an amazing year of new grads. Rory's approach to storytelling broke the mould, cleverly animating a conversation that may, or may not, have happened, with an esoteric mix of 2D, 3D and live-action. PLEASE catch Mr Madila at a festival near you, or plead with us and we may be able to share it in secret - such a fantastic film!
Asides from that, we discovered, Rory is also a top bloke, with a lot of interests and creativity that propels his work. He trained at the country's top 3D school (the National Centre for Computer Animation), but found a love for 2D and bullied his 3D skills in to tools that work across genre. His 2D design reminds us of the legendary Don Hertzfeldt, his 3D of David O'Reilly, and his abstract work shakes everything up. This guy is complex (we thought) but actually, turns out, he's really nice!
To sum up, we're just completely thrilled to bring him to Beakus, and look forward to working on lots of great projects together. Aw, was that a bit gushy? Stuff it.
